All up similar bikes different attitudes. SXC more responsive, lighter, better on tight tracks but still able to do long hauls if you get the fuel capacity sorted. 640 Adventure carries its extra weight up high and "feels" like a bigger bike. Both (in Australia) carry same amount of oil and have same service requirements (5000 km).
I sold one when I bought my 990. Great machine. I moved to the 990 only because at highway speed the 640 got a little buzzy. I would ride a lot of dirt trails/roads 50 miles or so miles out and then 50 miles asphalt back. As I started extending that 50 miles I decided on the 990. I like the 640 way better in the dirt. Most people prefer the softer set-up of the other bikes for on-road. The 640 has more power than the Yamahas and a lot less weight. My overriding impression from the XT660 tests was 'my doG that thing is heavy' but it's comparable with most in the class: all but the DR650 are 25 kg-ish heavier than the KTMs.
